Adjectives

-are listed in the masculine singular form in a dictionary or glossary

-must agree in number & gender with the noun that they modify

-most adjectives come after the noun but some come before the noun

-adjectives that end in an e can either end in e(m.&fem. sing.) or es(m.pl. &

 fem. pl.)

-adjectives that end in an o can end in an o(m.sing.), a(fem. sing.), os(m.pl.),

       or as(fem. pl.)

-adjectives that end in a consonant can either end in a consonant(m.sing. & fem.

 sing.) or a consonant + es(m.pl. & fem. pl.)

 

Exs.  las chicas bonitas(all are feminine plural)

       los chicos guapos(all are masculine plural)

       el libro grande(all masculine singular)

       la carpeta roja(all are feminine singular)

Regular AR Verb Conjugations

-Drop the AR and then add the following endings depending on what the subject is

 

Yo (o)

Nosotros/as (amos)

(as)

Vosotros/as (‡is)

ƒl, ella, Ud. (a)

Ellos, ellas, Uds. (an)

 

Exs.        Ella/bailar              Nosotros/hablar

              Ella baila       Nosotros hablamos

              She dances     We talk/speak

 

              Ellos/nadar

              Ellos nadan

              They(m) swim

Examples:

 

Yo (correr)=corro

 

Nosotros (vivir)=vivimos

 

Paco (beber)=bebe

 

Uds. (ver)=ven

 

Gustar=to like

       -Is a unique verb that is not used like most verbs

       -In the present tense it is normally only used in the

 Ud. Or Uds. Forms

       -The 2 forms that are used are  gusta & gustan-Depending on if you like one object or more than one object or if the object is plural

       -When using a form of Gustar one must also use a Direct Object Pronoun

       -One may also use an A Phrase to clarify who is doing the liking or the disliking

       -In English we say ÒI like pizza,Ó but in Spanish they say ÒPizza is pleasing to me.Ó

 

Indirect Object Pronouns

Me=to me

Nos=to us

Te=to me

Os=to you all

Le=to her/him

Les=to them

 

       Exs. I like pizza.            Me gusta la pizza.

Literal translation is ÒPizza is pleasing to meÓ

                                           Me=to me

                             Gusta is used because pizza

 is one object

 

              She likes cars.        Le gustan los carros.

                                           Literal translation is ÒThe

 cars are pleasing to herÓ

                                           Le=to her

Gustan is used because cars is plural

 

***If you notice on the Indirect Object Pronoun chart,

 Le could actually mean either Òto him,Ó or Òto herÓ

       to clarify the meaning, one should use an

A Phrase.***

 

A Phrases

A m’=to me

A nosotros=to us

A ti=to me

A vosotros=to you all

A Žl, ella, Ud.=to her/him

A ellos, ellas, Uds.=to them

 

Ex.  They(m.) like tacos.              A ellos, les gustan los

 tacos.

                                           Literal translation is

 ÒThe tacos are pleasing

 to themÓ

                                           A ellos is used to clarify

the les=to them

                                           Gustan is used because

 tacos are plural
