Telling Time

-When telling time the verb ser is used(Forms es & son)

-The definite articles la and las are used

-What time is it?=¿Qué hora es?

-At what time is it?=¿A qué hora es?

-Noon=Es mediodía

-Midnight=Es medianoche

-Right Side Formula(Minutes 0-30)

       Es/Son + la/las+ Hour+y+minutes after

       7:10-Son las siete y diez

       7:20-Son las siete y veinte

       1:05-Es la una y cinco

**When telling time you do not say**

 15-quince-instead you say cuarto

30-treinta-instead you say media

45-cuarenta y cinco-instead you say cuarto

-Left Side Formula(Minutes 31-59)

       Es/Son+la/las+Hour Plus 1+Menos+minutes till

       5:40-Son las seis menos veinte

       11:50-Son las doce menos diez

 

**    5:15-Son las cinco y cuarto  **

       11:30-Son las once y media 

       8:45-Son las nueve menos cuarto

 

** To say “At a time-You say A la/las instead of Es la/las ** 

 

Possession

-There are 2 different ways to show possession in Spanish

       Using the Possessive Adjectives

       Using the word De(of, from)

 

Exs.        los carteles de Julia

              Julia’s posters

             

              las carpetas de Pedro

              Pedro’s folders

 

Adjectives

-are listed in the masculine singular form in a dictionary or glossary

-must agree in number & gender with the noun that they modify

-most adjectives come after the noun but some come before the noun

-adjectives that end in an e can either end in e(m.&fem. sing.) or es(m.pl. &

 fem. pl.)

-adjectives that end in an o can end in an o(m.sing.), a(fem. sing.), os(m.pl.),

       or as(fem. pl.)

-adjectives that end in a consonant can either end in a consonant(m.sing. & fem.

 sing.) or a consonant + es(m.pl. & fem. pl.)

 

Exs.  las chicas bonitas(all are feminine plural)

       los chicos guapos(all are masculine plural)

       el libro grande(all masculine singular)

       la carpeta roja(all are feminine singular)

 

Asking Questions

-one way of asking a question is by adding ¿no? or ¿verdad? To the end of a

 sentence

 

Exs. El examen es difícil, ¿no?

       Isn’t it?  Right?

      

       Te gustan los tacos, ¿verdad?

       Don’t you?  Right?
